The Mountain Never Knew My Name
A meditation on humility, courage, and mortality. Forged through a lifetime of confronting danger, on the playing field, at sea, beneath the ocean, and high above the earth. It arrives at a profound truth: fear is never conquered; it is encountered each time we step into the unknown. The frozen mountain becomes a powerful symbol of nature's indifference and life's ultimate test, where experience offers no guarantees and every moment demands complete presence. In that unforgiving landscape, achievement matters less than character, and survival is measured not by triumph over fear, but by the grace with which we face it. Ultimately, the poem suggests that courage is not found in conquering the mountain, but in accepting our own vulnerability with quiet resolve. It asks only that we live honestly, love deeply, and leave behind a life worthy of remembrance - not by monuments of our own making, but bysomething infinitely greater than ourselves.
The Mountain Never Knew My Name
I have spent much time on the edge,
where conviction is measured against consequence.
Where bodies collide,
pain fleeting,
and resolve is forged one blow at a time.
Into storms where the froth of the sea offers no mercy,
diving to depths where sunlight surrenders to darkness
and silence carries the weight of eternity.
I have launched myself high above the earth,
carried by invisible winds,
gliding beneath tempestuous skies.
And stood atop towers of steel,
where the wind bends the structure,
the world below dissolves into colour and light.
Yet, lying only inches above the ice,
hurtling down a frozen mountain,
where speed, and existence became instinct
and the smallest mistake carried the greatest consequence.
It was the ice beneath,
the voice within,
and the quiet hope that when the journey was over,
the mountain would remain,
and I, humbled by its silence,
would carry its memory forever.
