Iljuwas (Bill Reid)
‍

Upon observing a mask in my collection, Iljuwas (Bill Reid) wrote a construal that has become a daily touchstone. It reminds me that leadership is not measured by appearances, status, or eloquent words, but by the quiet discipline of listening deeply, acting with humility, and drawing wisdom from a life of experience. Its timeless teachings call me to ensure that my thoughts, words, and actions remain aligned with integrity, to honour those who came before me, serve those beside me, and accept responsibility for the generations yet to come. Construal This is Not Adornment, but Instruction.

Without eyes, it rejects illusion and judgment based on appearance. Without a mouth, it cautions against empty promises and carelesswords. Its large ears carry the deepest truth: leadership begins with listening- patiently, humbly, and with respect. The deep creases in the face record a life lived. They hold the marks of struggle, learning, resilience, and experience - wisdom not given, but earned. The three feathers and flowing hair speak to national balance, spirit, and continuity: an alignment of thought, heart, and action. They honour what came before, acknowledge the responsibilities of the present, and carry forward a commitment to those who will follow.
